History of Kinglake West The suburb was named after surveyor Alexander Kinglake. In 1861, gold was first discovered in the town. Later on, the area was cleared for timber and was used for farming. Tramways were opened to transport timber to the Whittlesea railway station. Some mill workers started farming when the mills closed.
