Overview Kinglake is a suburb within the local government areas of the Shires of Murrindindi and Nillumbuk. It is around 56 kilometres from the Melbourne Central Business District. It is neighboured by the localities of Kinglake Centra, Pheasant Creek, Toolangi, Kinglake West, Castella, Strathewen, St. Andrews, Christmas Hills, and Steels Creek. As of the 2016 census, Kinglake has 1,536 residents.

History of Kinglake It was in 1861 when gold was discovered on the eastern border of the town in an area that was later known as Mountain Rush. A year after, a post office was established there but also closed in 1863 when miners moved to other areas.
The township of Kinglake, however, was established much later. Its name was in honour of British historian Alexander William Kinglake, who just completed an eight-volume history of the Crimean War around the time Kinglake was established as a town.
