Overview Kogarah is a suburb of Southern Sydney in New South Wales located 14 kilometres south of the Sydney Central Business District. There were 15,124 people in the suburb, according to the 2016 population census. It has several heritage-listed sites, including Toomevara Lane Chinese Market Gardens.

History of Kogarah Kogarah is named after Kogarah Bay that is located on the northern shore of the Georges River. The name was first derived from an Aboriginal word implying ‘rushes or place of reeds’. In the years 1760-1835, land grants were made to John Townson and James Chandler. The suburb has a mixture of residential, commercial, and industrial areas. Also, there are many schools in the area as well as health care services. Today, the suburb is developing rapidly and features all types of residential developments.
