Overview Labrador is a suburb in the City of Gold Coast around 10 kilometres north of the central business district. This coastal area is home to 18,261 residents as per the 2016 census. Labrador is surrounded by Biggera Waters, Main Beach, Arundel, Parkwood, and Southport.
Living in Labrador Over the last ten years, Labrador has experienced rapid growth, with many new and luxurious buildings being established in the area. From the Broadwater beachfront and across the suburb, shops, bars and restaurants are found in Labrador. It is now also being known for its thriving cafe precinct.
Manufacturing and light industrial businesses are located on the west side of the suburb, while the central shopping district is in Labrador Park Shopping Centre. As for educational facilities, Labrador has two primary schools, two high schools and three private schools.
History of Labrador Labrador's area was part of Portion 62 of Crown Land, which was purchased by sugar farmer Robert Muir and investor John Lennon in April of 1878. Not long after, the land was surveyed and divided into 19 sections.
The Labrador Hoel was established in 1881, where most of its patrons were passengers from Brisbane who arrived by boat. Years later, a few more hotels were built in the area and residences and a state school. It is believed that Labrador was named by Muir after a local fishery in north Canada due to the similarities of both areas.
