History of Main Beach When Southport was the primary recreational hub, Main Beach was called after the town's main surf beach and was initially called "Southport East." After the bridge opened in 1926, the land was bought up, and vacation cottages were built. Some guest homes were built, but the region had little or no permanent inhabitants.
