It is the administrative centre for the Lane Cove Council LGA and is neighboured by Lane Cove West and North, Artarmon, Linley Point, Osborne Park, Riverview, Longueville, Northwood. As of the 2016 census, 10,817 residents call Lane Cove their home.

History of Lane Cove Before the European settlement, the area was inhabited by the Cam-mer-ray-gal Group.

There are several theories on where Lane Cove got its name. Some believe that it was named after cartographer Lt. Michael Lane, while others argue that it was in honour of John Lane, son of the London Lord mayor. However, the first written use of the name was in 1788, after Lt. William Bradley sailed along the suburb’s river.

Land grants took place in the suburb around 1794, and fast forward to the 19th century, farms and dairies were already established. It was after World War II when Lane Cove experienced residential growth.
