The suburb is around 80 kilometres southwest of Melbourne and is just 2.4 kilometres from the Geelong central business district. Marshall is surrounded by the suburbs of Belmont, Breakwater, Grovedale, and Charlemont.
Living in Marshall Marshall is primarily a residential suburb described by its locals to have a "safe and family-friendly vibe". Although facilities are few within the suburb, the Marshall railway station allows access to the Geelong CBD and other surrounding areas. There are plenty of amenities found in Geelong, from shopping, restaurants, cafes, as well as access to beaches.

History of Marshall Marshall was formerly called Marshalltown. Around the mid-19th century, the nearby suburb of Breakwater was used for tanneries and other animal bi-product industries. During this time, Marshall was covered with wattle, which was a source of wattle bark for the tanneries operating nearby.
By the early 1900s, Marshall already had a small township and several facilities such as a school and post office. Fast forward to 2012, the size of the suburb was significantly reduced, where two-thirds of its area was re-gazetted to be part of Charlemont.
