History of Moe Initially, the suburb was known as 'The Moe' or 'Mowie.' The town's name is said to derive from a Boonwurrung or Kurnai Aboriginal phrase that means "the swampy condition of the land." The Boonwurrung Aboriginal people lived in the area before Europeans arrived. The township of Moe was founded in the 1850s and was initially located 3 kilometres north of its current location, which, at that moment, was named 'Westbury.'
