Mooloolaba has an extensive fishing fleet and serves as the northern base for pilot vessels that regulate traffic in Moreton Bay and the Port of Brisbane. The 2016 national census recorded the total population of the town at 18,990.

History of Mooloolaba Mooloolaba was known initially as Mooloolah Heads. The name was derived from the Aboriginal words "Mulla", which means "red-bellied black snake," or "Mulu", as snapper fishes were called. When Thomas O'Connor subdivided his land and offered it for sale to the public, he adopted the name Mooloolaba.
