Overview Mornington is a beachside suburb of Melbourne, situated on the Mornington Peninsula. The suburb is located 57 kilometres away from Melbourne’s central business district. Port Phillip Bay is located on Mornington’s west, while the other neighbouring suburbs are Mount Eliza, Baxter, Moorooduc and Mount Martha. As per the 2016 census, Mornington has 23,989 residents.

History of Mornington The first inhabitants of Mornington are believed to be the Boonwurrong people. Europeans arrived in the area in the 1840s, where fishing, logging and agriculture became the means of livelihood.
By 1858, a pier was established in the suburb and became a social and economic gateway of the region to Melbourne. From then, Mornington became a popular tourist destination, and in 1892 The Grand Hotel was opened.
The suburb’s original name was Schnapper and was renamed in 1864 to Mornington after the second Earl of Mornington.
