History of Mount Martha Captain William Hobson gave Mount Martha in honour of Martha Lonsdale, wife of the first Police Magistrate of Port Phillip. In the early centuries, Mount Martha was primarily used for farming until establishments and infrastructures gradually rose. The Martha hotel was built, followed by the Mount Martha Post Office. Soon after the second world war, several areas of Mount Martha were developed, and people started acquiring homes within the suburb.
