Overview Located on the Mornington Peninsula, Safety Beach lies on a strip of land perched between Port Philip Bay and Mount Martha. A part of Metropolitan Melbourne, the suburb is south of the city CBD and under the Mornington municipal government. At the 2016 census, it had 4,821 residents. Safety Beach is home to the Martha Cove inland harbour and over 100 bath boxes.

History of Safety Beach The place was earlier named Shark Bay due to these feared fishes in the sea. After the cattle farms were shut down and safety beach-bathing boxes were built, Safety Beach was named in 1963. Hugh Jamieson was the first to set up a huge estate in 1841. In the next five decades, many more settlers came to the area, and it soon became a hub of cattle farms. However, the farms were removed in the 1950s, and residential development picked up speed. The Martha Cove inland harbour construction started in 2004 despite lots of opposition.
