Canadian Stream flows through the heart of the neighbourhood, running north to south.

History of Mount Helen Mount Helen was listed as a flag post in the Victorian municipality directories from 1910 to 1947. Mount Helen was recognised as a pasture and habitation zone in 1960, indicating its rapid urban expansion. In 1966, institutional officials in Ballarat and the State Education Department were looking for a place for increased higher education institutions and selected a site 1 km east of the housing neighbourhood. Mount Helen's Ballarat Institute of Higher Learning first opened its doors in 1970. In 1994, it was renamed the University of Ballarat, and in 2014, it was renamed Federation University.
