History of Mount Nelson Originally, Mount Nelson was called "Nelson's Hill" but was later modified to its current name. Captain William Bligh discovered the place during his exploration of the Van Diemens Land, the island where Tasmania sits. He named it after the renowned botanist David Nelson, a loyal Bounty crew during his mutiny term. In 1811, Governor Lachlan Macquarie built a signal post to see the ships entering the area. A century later, Mount Nelson became a modern suburban among immigrants during World War II.
