One of the historical areas in Newcastle East is Fort Scartchley, a coastal defence designed by Lt. Col. Peter Scratchley, which was built around 1881 to 1886. During World War II, the fort had a key role when the guns fired from the port targeted a Japanese submarine, which shelled in the city in June 1942. The fort is now converted into a museum.
