History of Newcastle The original inhabitants of Newcastle were the Awabakal and Worimi Aboriginal groups, who called the area “Malumbiba”.

In September of 1797, the area’s first European settler, John Shortland, explored the area. From his report, coal mining began, and after two years, coal became the first export of the colony in NSW. By the early 19th century, various groups began to explore Newcastle, including coal diggers, timber-cutters and even escaped convicts. It was around 1815 to 1818 when a building boom began in the area. Streets were laid out, and Newcastle’s first church was erected.

The area remained as a penal settlement until it was opened up to farming in 1822.
