History of Wickham Before the arrival of the European settlers, the area’s original inhabitants were the Awabakal Aboriginal people. The area was proclaimed a municipality on 27 February 1871 by the efforts of James Hannel, who was Wickham’s first mayor. It is said that the suburb’s name, which means “village by the creek”, was a misspelling of Whickham - a suburb of Newcastle upon Tyne in England.
