History in North Balgowlah Balgowlah was named after an Aboriginal word which means ‘North Harbour’, regarding its position from Port Jackson. In July 1988, North Balgowlah was shattered when a local man fired his gun and injured two people. This incident also led to a siege in the area but ended when the killer’s body was found in his burnt-out house on Woodbine Street.
