Overview Twelve kilometres north of Sydney's CBD, Balgowlah is located close to the North Harbour area. An administrative part of the Northern Beaches Council, it is surrounded by Balgowlah Heights, North Balgowlah and Fairlight suburbs. According to the 2016 census, 22872 residents lived in Balgowlah.

Living in Balgowlah Balgowlah is a pleasant place to live with some outstanding views. The A8 highway connects Sydney with the Northern Beaches district and runs along its western and northern boundaries. Sydney's CBD is less than 30 minutes. The local area symbolises an affluent and peaceful living away from noisy urban areas. Bus transport in the area is excellent, while Manly ferry services connect Balgowlah to many hubs in the region. There are plenty of parks, nature reserves and schools. Stockland Balgowlah and other traditional shops at Sydney Road provide an enchanting experience to enjoy.

History of Balgowlah Balgowlah was earlier called Kay-ye-my. The English named it Little Manly because of its proximity to the modern-day tourist hub of Manly, which is 3 km west of it. A large number of Aboriginals living in the area died following a smallpox outbreak in 1789. The next year, the first convict settlers arrived there.

In 1832, the settlement was renamed Balgowlah or north harbour in the Aboriginal language. Australia's first prime minister Edmund Barton was among its most famous residents. The area grew after 1960, with many commercial zones replacing dairy farms in the area.
