Overview Nowra is a suburb in the South Coast region of New South Wales, Australia; it is also the County seat and commercial centre of the City of Shoalhaven. It is neighboured by the following localities: North Nowra, West Nowra, Mundamia, Bomaderry, South Nowra, Bolong, Terara, and Worrigee. As of the 2016 census, the population of Nowra was 25,624.

History of Nowra The name “Nowra”, originally spelled by Europeans as “nou-woo-roo”, is said to be an Aboriginal word for the Black Cockatoo. The Nowra Township was officially recognised in 1852, and a postal service was established in the area in 1861. Nowra was declared a Town in 1885 and a city in 1979. Nowra has many heritage-listed sites, including the Graham Lodge at Pleasant Way Street and the Meroogal, a former residence and a house museum at 35 West Street.
