History of South Nowra Before the Europeans arrived, the Wodi-Wodi tribe resided on the south of the Bomaderry creek. They belonged to the Yuin nation. The Dharawal people occupied the north of the Bomaderry Creek. Mary Reibey, an ex-convict, asked for a land grant in the Burrier area, which forms the southern part of the Shoalhaven River. The official recognition came in the year 1852, and in 1861 a postal service started. The Archer racehorse became the first horse to win the first Melbourne Cup.
