Overview Nudgee is a northeastern suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is located 17.6 km northwest of Brisbane's central business district. In the 2016 population census, 3,578 people were residing in the suburb.
Living in Nudgee Nudgee is a beautiful little suburb and provides easy access to Nudgee beach, a great spot for a walk or to take the dog! It is amongst the first suburbs in Brisbane to be connected to the National Broadband Network. It has a cemetery, the largest private cemetery in Brisbane, and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane operates it. There is also a golf club at Nudgee Road and a rugby league club. The Bora Ring and the Nudgee Waterhole are two main attractions of the suburb. It is served by the Nudgee Railway Station and provides access to neighbouring suburbs.
History of Nudgee Nudgee came from the Yuggera word in the Yugarabul dialect nardha and means' place of ducks'. In 1866, St Vincent's Orphanage opened on Queens Road, and it was operated by the Sisters of Mercy. In 1935, the orphanage was renamed St Vincent's Home for Children, and it operated until the 1950s and closed in 1971. The orphanage started with 47 children but during its entire course, more than 10,500 children lived there. The development of the area started in 1875 with the establishment of Nudgee State School.
