Olinda, the highest suburb on the Dandenong Ranges, is 49 kilometres east of the Melbourne central business district via the M3. It is within the local government area of the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
Living in Olinda Olinda is a well-known tourist destination with cafes, boutique restaurants, craft and antique shops, and art galleries located near the town's two commercial centres- one at Ridge Road (at the turn-off for the peak of Dandenong) and the other at the junction of the road leading to Monbulk.
Olinda is surrounded by some natural waterfalls and walking trails such as the Olinda Falls and Cascade Walk. East of the town is the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden, a 43-hectare parkland with daffodils, rhododendrons, camellias, and azaleas that bloom in spring. History of Olinda Olinda got its name from Olinda Creek. The creek was named after Alice Olinda Hodgkinson, daughter of Clement Hodgkinson, the acting Surveyor General of Victoria, in 1858.
Olinda was first a logging settlement. In the early 1900s, more land was available for horticulture, and the town began to grow significantly.
Initially, berry farming, flower growing, and dairying became flourishing industries in Olinda. Today, tourism is the town's principal industry.
The Olinda Post Office opened in 1901.
