History of Ormiston The Koobenpul inhabited the central island coastline between Talwarrapin (Redland Bay) and the estuary of the Brisbane River, which included Ormiston today. Louis Hope, Ormiston's first European inhabitant, purchased 800 acres bordering Raby Bay's western coast in 1853. Hope developed a slab house (1853) that was eventually transformed to an out-kitchen, the Ormiston House residence (1863), and a sugar factory during the following 20 years (1865). With his own 20-acre cane farm, Hope became a key player in the development of Queensland's sugar industry.
