History of Cleveland The original inhabitants of this area were of Quandamooka’s Koobenpul clan. In 1841 this area was recommended as a seaport township. Before then, it was a penal settlement. 1850 proclaimed Cleveland as a township. The Grand View Hotel, now known as the Old Courthouse, was among the first large buildings built here in 1852. Among the various fruits and vegetables grown in the area, the most popular were strawberries, tomatoes, pineapples, herbs, and other produce. The 2016 census reported a population of about 14800.
