History of Purga The suburb of Purga was named after the parish that was located in the area. The Aboriginal word pur-pur is the word that is the original name of the place, and it means a meeting place. The State School of the area just opened in 1871, and there was no written history about the place before 1871. The residents in the Fassifern Valley petitioned to include the district in creating a railway line that still stands even up to this day. Because of the petition, Purga was served by three stations, including its very own Purga railway station.
