Overview Queanbeyan is a city in the south-eastern region of New South Wales, Australia. It is located in the Southern Tablelands region, adjacent to the Australian Capital Territory. The suburb lies on the Queanbeyan River, and its economy runs on manufacturing, retail, light construction, service, and agriculture. As per the 2016 population census, there were 36,348 people in the city.

History of Queanbeyan The word Queanbeyan has an Aboriginal meaning, ‘clear waters’, and the city had officially proclaimed a township in 1838. Timothy Beard, squatting held by ex-convict and innkeeper, is the person behind the town’s growth. In 1851, some traces of gold and silver mines were discovered, and in 1836, a Post Office was established. In 1859, the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Limited also opened in the city.
