Overview Rockhampton City in Central Queensland, Australia, is an industrial and agricultural centre of the north. History of Rockhampton City In 1853, Charles and William Archer arrived in the area in search of grazing lands. The Archer brothers set up their pastoral run in 1855 at Gracemere and constructed a woolshed in the foothills of a bar of rocks, which were incorporated as a village. Charles Archer is credited for coining the name "Rockhampton" along with local commissioner William Wiseman. July 1856 was the time when permanent British settlement began in the township. Richard Palmer constructed the Native Police barracks, touted to be the first habitable British building at Rockhampton.
