History of Seventeen Mile Rocks Seventeen Mile Rocks is titled after a group of rocks that John Oxley recorded 17 miles (27 km) from the Brisbane River mouth on December 3, 1823. They crossed the river from Counihan Road. The river was made navigable in the 1860s by removing these rocks. But some of the rocks survived and were marked with beacons. Between 1960 and 1966, all remaining boulders were removed to expand the river and enable marine boat access.
