History of Shorncliffe Shorncliffe was popular with the name of Warra among Aboriginal people, which means 'expanse of water. In 1842, Robert Dixon surveyed Moreton Bay and explored Cabbage Tree Creek. The nearby suburb of Sandgate was named by James Burnett, an early explorer and surveyor. In 1897, John Cameron made allotments in the area through various auctions.
