Like all of the west Peninsula, Sorrento is interbedded by sandstone and was mined for the Melbourne construction industry, notably following the golden discoveries.

Living in Sorrento Sorrento is a charming tiny community with attractive dining options, as well as several good pubs. The municipality has a rich history, and there are still some historic residences strewn throughout that harken back to a bygone era. The bay is located at one end of Main Street, where the Queenscliff - Sorrento Ferry sails, while the ocean is located at the other end. Moreover, the municipality has a lively beachfront in the summers and a tranquil coastal village in the winter. Several magnificent seaside villas are available, offering the best experience in the region.

History of Sorrento When the region was initially allowed for house construction in 1869, it is assumed that the term 'Sorrento' (after the Italian beach resort) was derived from what has been known as Sullivans Bay. In 1800 and 1802, British military officials examined Port Phillip Bay. In the following years, a British operation of two ships and some 300 personnel was built in Sorrento's Sullivans Bay, a slight indentation overlooking the Harbor Phillip Inlet. The colony seems to have been motivated to enclose the Bass Strait and prevent French colonization. However, the community was relocated to Tasmania in May 1804 after just seven months.
