History of South Morang The first Europeans arrived in South Morang in 1824. While travelling from Sydney to Port Phillip, two Englis men – William Hovell and Hamilton Hume – this extensive plain dominated by the Wurundjeri Aboriginals. Pastoral groups settled in the area in the 1830s and started farming. By 1840, South Morang was home to many wealthy landowners making money from extensive farmlands. A post office came up in 1873, followed by a railway station in 1889. Like many outer Melbourne suburbs, South Morang saw a real estate boom in the late 1990s and grew to become a suburban area.
