Overview South Penrith is a suburb of Sydney in New South Wales (NSW). It is a part of the local government area of the City of Penrith and the Greater Western Sydney region. It is neighboured by the following suburbs: Penrith, Jamisontown, Glenmore Park, Kingswood, and Orchard Hills. As of the 2016 census, the population of South Penrith was 44,806.

History of South Penrith The area of South Penrith is said to have been inhabited by the Mulgoa people, an Aboriginal tribe, before European settlement. These people would hunt Kangaroos and Emus for meat. In the late nineteenth century, this area got the name “York’s Estate” after landowners Charles and James York. In 1888, 100 acres of the land was purchased by the Penrith and Nepean Jockey Club to build a racecourse. The rest of the area was used for orchards, dairy farms and vineyards. In the 1970s, everything in the area except the racecourse and was turned into housing. The former racecourse was converted into Jamison Park.
