History of St Georges Basin St Georges Basin is named after the 12-km lagoon that forms its southern edge. The Dhurga Aborigines populated the area when Europeans arrived there. These natives called the lagoon “Bherwherree.” Captain James Cook passed through the coast on be St Georges Day in 1770 and wrote this in his memoir. When Thomas Florance, a surveyor, reached Jervis Bay in 1827, he named the lake St Georges Basin following Captain Cook’s memoir. When settlements grew in the region, these were called after various lake features, such as Basin View, Sanctuary Point, and Sussex Inlet. The north-central land located off the lagoon’s mangrove edge became St Georges Basin. It expanded following the building of the Island Point Road and the Wool Road.
