Overview Tomerong is a small suburb in the South Coast region of New South Wales, Australia. It is located around 180 km south of the state capital Sydney and 20 km south of the commercial centre of the City of Shoalhaven. It is 8 km inland of the western shores of Jervis Bay. In the 2016 census, the population of the village was recorded as 1,065.
Living in Tomerong Tomerong was famous for farming and sawmilling and now became a residential area with medium-density houses and the commercial centre of Nowra. Also, it provides easy access to tourist areas, including Huskisson on Jervis Bay, the Morton National Park, and more. There is a school of arts, post office, public school, church, and fire service on Hawken Road.
Tomerong combines village life with beaches and has some spots for boating, fishing, and bushwalking. The village market is held on each month’s third Saturday.
History of Tomerong The European exploration and settlement began in 1801 when Lieutenant James Grant of the Lady Nelson visited inland from Jervis Bay. In the 1830s and 1840s, land grants were made around Jervis Bay and St Georges Basin. However, the first Tomerong land sale occurred in 1855. The area began to attract more settlers after constructing a bridge across Falls Creek. The bridge provided transport and mail services on the main south coast. In 1857, the Travellers Rest Hotel opened, and a post office and school were also established five years later.
