History Of Swansea In 1821, George Meredith, his family, and several workers came from Pembrokeshire, Wales, to this area. Meredith had a grant from Lieutenant-Governor William Sorell to farm around in the room right beside the oyster bay. He developed the land and made it suitable for grazing, stocking, and cropping. Several whaling stations were built on nearby islands to facilitate exporting whale oil. Gradually, Swansea was initially called the Great Swanport. In 1832, a Waterloo Point Post office was opened on 6th September and hence was renamed Swansea in 1863.
