Overview Tannum Sands is a coastal town situated on the central east coast of Queensland, Australia. Tannum Sands and Boyne Island are separated by the Boyne River and joined by a bridge. At the 2016 census, 5,145 people were living in the suburb.
Living in Tannum Sands As Tannum Sands is primarily a tourist and residential suburb, it has a lot of beautiful spots. It is a popular fishing destination and offers easy access to the Great Barrier Reef, Lake Awoonga, and the Boyne River. The suburb hosts Australia’s largest family fishing event, the Boyne Tannum Hookup. The event is held on the Queens Birthday long weekend at Bray Park and attended by over 3000 people. The suburb has pleasant year-round temperatures and is home to many tourist destinations.
History of Tannum Sands The southern part of the Boyne River was initially called Redcliff but renamed Wild Cattle Creek. Redcliff represented the colour of the stoney cliffs, while the latter one was after the name of the creek that flows through the area. Although the town had been a popular fishing spot, it remained undeveloped due to its inaccessibility. The development started in the late 1930s with the launch of 12 beach lots. In 1951, the town was renamed Tannum Sands.
