History of Tarneit Tarneit was first utilised as agricultural rangeland pasture in the 1830s when the region was first settled. This region was given the name Tarneit when it was first mapped in 1839–1840. It was derived from the Wathaurong term meaning white, which was used to describe the colour. During the rural days, its population never exceeded 200, and its significant residential development did not occur until the late 1990s.
