History of Tolga The town was called Martin Town, named after sawmillers George and Robert Martin. The Martintown provisional school opened in 1895 and was renamed Tolga Provisional School in 1905. In 1909, the school became Tolga State School. When the Tablelands railway line was extended to Atherton from Mareeba in 1903, the town changed its name to Tolga, derived from the local Aboriginal word.
