History of Mareeba Mareeba in Aboriginal language means the meeting of waters. The town stands at the very place where the Barron River meets Granite, Tinaroo and Emerald Creeks. James Mulligan was the first European to arrive in the area in 1875. John Atherton began a settlement in Mareeba in 1877, and soon it became an important halt for those travelling between Port Douglas and Herberton. The town grew after a railway station opened in 1893. By 1900, it had schools, hospitals, a post office and many other civic amenities. Mareeba was an essential airfield during World War II.
