Overview Valentine is a suburb of Greater Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia. It is located 20 kilometres from the central business district of Newcastle and lies along the eastern shoreline of Lake Macquarie. According to the 2016 census, the population of the area was recorded as 5,516 people.
Living in Valentine Valentine is quite an exciting suburb to live in and home to several convenience and specialty shops. It has a post office, a bowling club, petrol station, GP office, a butcher, and a newsagent. Mr Thomas Croudace built the first house in the suburb in the 1860s. Some of the trees planted near that house are still there within the eastern portion of the park. There is also a dairy located near the creek to the South. Most of the streets in the area have aboriginal names except Toll’s estate owned by the Toll family.
History of Valentine Valentine was named after a property speculator and company director, Mr Henry Valentine Joseph. He owned land in Valentine and lived on the Hawkesbury River. The area was named after him by Henry Halloran, a surveyor who surveyed the area in 1916. Henry Halloran was also responsible for surveying many of Sydney’s suburbs. In the late 1920s, the first-holiday cottage was built, and the development was pretty slow as there was no usable road and electricity.
