Overview Waldara is a tiny suburb of Wangaratta in the North East region of Victoria. It is located 255 kilometres from the Melbourne central business district and is neighboured by Wangandary, Wangaratta, Wangaratta West, and North Wangaratta.

As of the 2016 census, the population of Waldara is 636.

Living in Waldara Waldara is primarily a residential area, where homes sit on expansive lands. There are not many facilities within Waldara, except for the Waldara Cottage, which is also nearby the Wangaratta Golf Club. The Wangaratta-Yarrawonga Road passes through Waldara, making it convenient for locals to head to nearby facilities in Wangaratta.

History of Waldara There is not much information about the history of Waldara. However, for Wangaratta (where Waldara is situated), it is recognised that the original inhabitants of the area are the Pangerang Aboriginal peoples.

European explorers first passed through the area in 1824, and in 1836, Major Thomas Mitchell, during his expedition here, reported that the land was a potential location of grazing pasture.

The first squatter to live in Wangaratta was Thomas Rattray, who built a hut here and found a settlement that was called “Ovens Crossing.” By 1843, a post office had already opened in the area and was called “Ovens”.
