Overview Wandoan is a suburb and locality in the Western Downs Region, Queensland, Australia. The suburb was formerly known as Juandah. It is situated on the Leichhardt Highway about halfway between Toroom and Miles. According to the 2016 census, the suburb had a population of 566 people.
Living in Wandoan Wandoan is a beautiful suburb that is a welcome stop between Miles and Taroon along the Leichhardt Highway. It is home to many farming families, and the area is prime farming land. Also, it is home to some of the best bush camping and fishing spots. The area is popular for self-guided heritage trail tours to discover historical buildings. There are many beautiful tourist destinations in the suburb, including the local Heritage Trail, the Wandoan Windmill, Community Cultural Centre, the Wandoan Races, and Wandoan Unlicensed Airport. The suburb has all main services such as ambulance, doctors, fire brigade, tank water, railway station, chemist, hotel/motel, official post office, and more.
History of Wandoan The development in Wandon started in 1849 with the establishment of Juandah Station. In the 1890s, a wayside hotel was built in the area and it was well established by the end of the nineteenth century. On October 30, 1911, Juandah Provisional School opened and became a State School on March 1, 1916. However, it closed in 1922 but again opened in 1923. In 1914, the railway to Miles opened, and in 1987, the Wandoan Library opened.
