History of Wandong The Taungurong people are still the original proprietors of Wandong. They are members of the Kulin nation, which occupied a broad region of central Victoria, covering Port Phillip Bay and its environment. Moreover, Wandong is an indigenous word that means "Spirit." On December 13, 1824, Hamilton Hume with Captain William Hilton Hovell were the first Europeans to reach Wandong, travelling via the current neighbourhood's centre. The explorers continued 1260 meters south of Arkell's Road in Wandong, crossing the Separation Ranges at the modest peak known as Hume's Pass. They then proceeded south via Eastern Ridge, Hidden Valley, and downwards to Merri Creek, Wallan East at Kelby Lane.
