History of Wy Yung Wy Yung is an indigenous word that means "wild duck". European settlers first moved into the area around the 1860s. After a decade, Wy Yung's population had increased and was enough for a provision of two schools and a hotel. The town's first school was established in 1875 and was originally called "Doherty's Corner". The second school, Wy Yung West, opened the year after. A ferry service taking passengers across the Mitchell River in the same year also began.
The suburb remained as a farming district until the urban housing boom in the 1970s.
