In the native language, Wyong means "'place of running water", and the town's location adjacent to the mouth of the Wyong River aptly indicates this. The first settlement began in 1825 by William Cape. It was a massive homestead spread over 1,000 acres. It grew to be a town in 1888 and got a railway station in 1889. Wyong became a separate municipality in 1957.
