History of Yarra Junction Yarra Junction combines the words "Yarra" (entire village) and "Junction," referring to the 36-inch gauge of the Powelltown timber tramway. The Wawurrong and Bunurrong people of the traditional Wurundjeri-Balluk Aboriginal group occupied the area before the arrival of Europeans. The first Europeans to arrive in the area in the 1850s were gold miners.
In the 1880s, the area was broken up into 10-hectare blocks and was called Little Yarra Junction. in 1908; Little Yarra Junction was renamed Yarra Junction. The Yarra Junction Post Office opened in 1901, following the opening in the same year of the Yarra Junction Railway Station.
