Overview Yarralumla is a sizeable inner-south suburb located in South Canberra. It is situated extended on the Southern bank of Lake Burley Griffin. The local Ngunnawal people named this area and means "echo". As per the 2016 census, the population of this area was 2,890.

History of Yarralumla Yarralumla was a part of the traditional land owned by the Ngunnawal people. Europeans first settled in this area in 1828. It was named after the local Ngunnawal Indigenous Australian name for the site in 1834. The prominent New South Wales parliamentarian Sir Terence Aubrey Murray purchased Yarralumla in 1837. He lived there with his wife, Mary. After the death of Mary, her brother Augustus Gibbes acquired the land in 1858 and sold it in 1881 to Fredrick Campell. Campbell built a three-story house on this land in the early 1890s. His home later formed the basis of the present Governor-General of Australia's official Canberra residence.
