Overview Yass is a town situated in Southern Tablelands, NSW and is 280 kilometres southwest of Sydney and 59 kilometres away from Canberra. The localities surrounding Yass are Bowning, Bango, Manton, good Hope, Boambolo, and Marchmont. According to the 2016 census, Yass has a population of 6,506.

History of Yass The original inhabitants of Yass are the Wiradjuri and Ngunnawal Aboriginal tribes. They called the area “yarrh” or “yharr”, meaning “running water”.
It was in 1830 that the first settlement began in the area. Seven years after, the town was gazetted. By 1843, Yaass was already incorporated as District Council and had a population of over 200 residents.
Australian poet A.B. “Banjo” Paterson spent his childhood in the district when his family transferred there in 1871 when he was just seven years old. He, later on, bought a property there. Another poet, Patrick Hartigan, was born in Yass and studied in a convent school here.
