Overview Young, also called the Cherry Capital of Australia, is a suburb located in the south-central of New South Wales. It lies along the Burrangong Creek and the Great Dividing Range’s Western Slopes and is part of the local government area of Hilltops Council. According to the 2016 national census, the town’s total population is 11,669.
Living in Young The neighbourhood of Young is composed of small, rural villages, giving it that countryside vibe. But despite being a relatively small town, it has a lot of infrastructure and facilities. There is a shopping district in the area that houses significant chain stores, making employment opportunities abundant. In addition to these, the town has primary schools, intermediate schools, and colleges. Young has a lot of tourist attractions, and among the most popular are the Fresh Fruit and the Young Heritage Walk.
History of Young Young was known initially as the ‘Lambing Flat’ because its lands served as the birthing place for James Whites’ ewes. In 1960, gold was discovered in the town, which caught the attention of thousands of Prospectors from Europe and China. Young was proclaimed as a town in 1861, and during the same year, it was officially named ‘Young’ after New South Wales’ governor at the time, Sir John Young.
